Kia announced that it will debut a new car at the 2017 North American International Auto Show, Kia also included a teaser video with the launch of the microsite. It should also share its rear-wheel drive platform with the upcoming Genesis G70, which puts it in line with BMW 3 Series in terms of size. Kudos to Kia for aiming high. Hyundai is the parent company of both Kia and newly launched luxury brand Genesis.

The car takes clear influence from the Kia GT concept of 2011 in its overall shape and what’s visible of the front-end styling. The concept is rear-hinged rear doors and dramatic ‘floating’ front intake housings haven’t been carried over to the production version, though.

Unlike the concept, though, the Nurburgring-hardened Kia GT appears to get 4 conventional doors instead of pillarless suicide rear doors. The near-production car also misses out on the heavily styled headlights, and the rear-facing cameras that replaced the side mirrors on the show piece.

In terms of engines, the GT will likely offer the 315-horsepower four-cylinder from the GT4 Stinger concept and a frugal turbodiesel, but the 365 horsepower, 3.3-liter V6 from the Genesis G90 is not out of the question either. Stay tuned for full reveal on Feburary.

There’s no official word on pricing yet but the model will be positioned at the top of Kia’s range above the Optima. This will definitely put the GT up against a range of more upmarket rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Audi A4 and BMW 3 Series, with pricing to match. So around £30,000 is expected. We don’t expect to see it in showrooms before Summer of 2017, though.
